The goal of the proposed project is to create a complete Campus for the new Economics Department of the College of Kecskemét, which is evolutionary and innovative in all aspects and has strong ties with the City beyond its academic functions.
The various functions underlying an innovative approach in education and facilitating integration with the City are intended to be achieved through a building complex which is uniform yet at the same time consists of buildings of different character, surrounding an efficient and attractive urban space. The planned project will be implemented in various phases, following the development of the building plot, the framework of the lay-out plan and the expansion of the new College Department, while leaving sufficient room for future growth.
The design site is located within an old Kecskemét hospital, on the corner lot bordered by Izsáki út and Sport utca. The existing educational and administrative headquarters of the College of Kecskemét (KEFO) are situated on the other side of Izsáki út. The former Rudolf Barracks, a listed building, is on the opposite side of Sport utca.
The envisaged Campus will be a state-of-the-art educational institution, which represents a progressive trend in terms of both its architecture and functions. Nevertheless, it relies on traditional values and is based on the lay-out principles of renowned Anglo-Saxon universities, reconsidering and redefining such principles at the same time. The vision is one of a university that enables students to obtain useful and up-to-date skills and knowledge, based on research and hands-on experience. A university meeting those criteria is not restricted to teaching the syllabus. Instead, it strives to broaden students’ horizons and the way they look at the world, the arts, traditions or even gastronomy. The new educational trend is based on the principle of familiarising students with the complexity of life during their university studies, which is one of the deficiencies of the current educational system. One of the design criteria was to encourage the ‘NEW ALEXANDRIA’ approach in education through the creation of community-shaping spaces that enable information to be obtained from each other or on a smartphone or notebook. Another important element of the vision is to achieve that the Campus become a community-shaping force for the City by providing opportunities for local citizens to study, learn about the arts or even for recreation.
Main functions of the planned Campus include:
– Education – departments, lecture halls and seminar rooms
– Administration serving educational institutions
– Students’ residence – accommodating 400+200, with community functions
– Library, knowledge base, observatory
– Community functions – multi-functional lecture hall, exhibition space, canteen and culinary centre
