Városliget Zrt. announced a design competition for the new building of the Museum of Ethnography in December last year. The so called pre-qualification stage, which finalized the scope of applicants participating in the design process, was closed in February. As a result, our architect office has also been invited to the second (design) phase of Liget Budapest – Museum of Ethnography design competition. This means we compete with such participants like Zaha Hadid, the architect of MAXXI, the 21th century art museum in Rome or that of Glasgow Riverside Museum of Transport – who was awarded with Pritzker Prize that is the Nobel Prize in the profession of architecture, Bernard Tschumi Architects who designed Acropolis Museum in Athens or the architects of the new Google Headquarters in California (BIG) and Rem Koolhaas, also a Pritzker Prize-winning architect, who designed Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The new Museum of Ethnography will be located on the edge of the City Park, on Ötvenhatosok Square. The competition results are expected to be announced in May 2016. As part of Liget Budapest Project, which aims for the comprehensive and complex renewal of the City Park, the new home for the Museum of Ethnography is meant to satisfy all professional and visitor’s needs, the opening of which is scheduled for 2019.

Within the framework of Liget Budapest Project the realization of two new buildings has been decided so far, and they are going to be planned by world-renowned Japanese architects. The House of Hungarian Music, replacing the former Hungexpo office buildings to be demolished, is designed by Sou Fujimoto. The New National Gallery, to be erected in place of Petőfi Csarnok (Petőfi Hall) will be planned by the Pritzker Prize-winning SANAA architect studio, and our office is also involved in this latter project as associate designers.
