In January 2016, V\u00e1rosliget Zrt. announced a restricted, two-stage international architectural competition for the design of the Museum of Ethnography, to be implemented within the framework of Liget Budapest Project, to be located in the V\u00e1rosliget area of Budapest, in the vicinity of the Monument of the 1956 Revolution.<\/p>\n

Our office was invited to the competition among several well-known international architectural firms, and we submitted our plan in collaboration with T.\u00c9.R. Alkot\u00f3 Tervez\u0151 St\u00fadi\u00f3.<\/p>\n
Architectural concept:<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n
Gate motif:<\/u> the building reinforces and restores an earlier urban structure axis, which were marked by the V\u00e1rosligeti fasor and the Rond\u00f3. As a \u2018Gate to the Park\u2019, it functions as a physical and spiritual gateway between the City and the Garden, i.e. a man-built environment and natural environment. At the same time, similarly to most historical gates, it also functions as a lookout tower.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Internal space structure:<\/u> the layered ribbon-like internal masses of exhibition spaces are a metaphor of interconnected cultural stratification. The design of internal spatial structure is based on the diversity and interaction of cultures.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
External shell:<\/u> universal culture built of subcultures, an integrative experience of our times, laps over, weaves through and wraps the strip-like stratification of exhibition spaces like a veil.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Museum concept:<\/u> the main entrance to the Museum of Ethnography is on the ground floor of the building\u2019s left block. The exhibition spaces are aligned in a linear sequence on all other floors of the building.
\nThe Visitor Centre is located on the ground floor of the right-hand block. On that level, the museum exhibition space pierces through the Visitor Centre in the form of a vertical tube. Exhibition spaces in the two blocks are connected at level -1 by exhibition spaces of the temporary exhibition and the visitors\u2019 passage of the visual store.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Visitor experience concept:<\/u> the concept is based on an emphasis on the contrast of internal and external spaces: exhibition spaces are surrounded by a sort of man-built \u2018outdoors\u2019, an intermediate space filled with experience and tension.
\nThe exhibition spaces are concentrated in enclosed blocks, independent of the external shell, offering a separated and tranquil space for a concentrated museum experience.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Interaction of urban texture and natural texture:<\/u> the building responds to its unique spatial position at the boundary of man-built urban structure and the natural environment. The D\u00f3zsa Gy\u00f6rgy \u00fat fa\u00e7ade is more enclosed, only opening up near the main entrances. By contrast, the fa\u00e7ade facing the Park splits open, offering large surfaces for the sight, its vast glass frontispieces connecting the green environment with internal space.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Interaction between the \u201856 Monument and the Museum:<\/u> the \u201856 Monument is placed in a much more prominent position: in the middle of the \u2018Gate\u2019, with the upper mass of the museum building reaching its narrowest point right above the Monument, preventing it from covering up the sight of the sculpture from above. The chrome steel surfaces of the external shell reflect their environment, including the Monument, establishing a particular system of relations with the Monument.<\/p>\n
