Sustainability

At Bánáti + Hartvig Architects, great emphasis is placed on fostering our relations with our immediate and wider environment. This is evident in treating our employees, customers and clients as equal partners, and in our respect for both nature and the built environment. We endeavour to communicate transparently about our activities both inside and outside the firm.

In our Hungarian language podcast Beszélő építészet (Talking Architecture), we speak to invited experts about sustainability in architecture.

Responsible architecture

As architects, we are aware of our profession’s responsibility for the environment. Buildings and construction account for 39 per cent of the world’s total carbon emissions, 28 per cent coming from operational emissions and the remaining 11 per cent from embodied carbon emissions associated with materials and construction processes over the entire life cycle of a building.

Bearing this in mind, our fundamental goals have become…
…asserting green thinking in the operation of our firm,
…applying sustainability and circularity as the key principles in our work,
…minimising the environmental impact of the buildings we design throughout their entire life cycle, and
…educating everyone involved.

Circular architecture

With our own office building, we had the chance to put into practice our mentality and approach to sustainability to the fullest. Following the guidelines of circular architecture, we designed and created our new office building to have the smallest possible environmental impact.

ESG

Environmental

We strive to raise the level of environmental awareness in all our projects.

Social

On top of our professional activities as architects, we pay great attention to financially and actively supporting organisations and educational institutions that are in difficult situations. We maintain regular ties with the charity Budapest Bike Maffia and a special needs school, EGYMI in Gyömrő. By these means, we try to motivate and encourage everyone around us to help those in need.

Governance

The fundamental values of our practice include ethical behaviour, respect for human rights, fairness and impartiality, as well as fair employment and standing firm against corruption.

Continuous learning

In order to nurture continuous development, we support several of our colleagues with their studies in environmental civil engineering at the Budapest University of Technology. Our firm is also an active member of the Hungarian Green Building Council. Lajos Hartvig DLA is a member of the Council’s board and Péter Márkus is a member of the Climate Crisis Working Group.
